In 2022 PBS celebrated 40 years in the Pacific Northwest, with eight offices and more than 280 staff across Oregon and Washington.
PBS began 40 years ago with the goal of bridging the built and natural environment in a way that protects our precious resources, improves safety, and allows communities to thrive.
Over four decades, we’ve grown from a three-person operation in the heart of Portland, Oregon, to more than 280 dedicated staff in offices across the Northwest.

Sustainability
We commit to regularly evaluating our impacts and implementing changes that help reduce the company’s environmental footprint. We strive to continually educate our clients and encourage them to join us in creating a sustainable future.
PBS’ Sustainability Program is based on the principles of The Natural Step and utilizes what is termed the Triple Bottom Line. These include measures of environmental, economic, and social impacts – otherwise referred to as the Three P’s – People, Planet and Profit. These continue to be our guideposts when evaluating our operations, our actions, and our work, and we strive to continually make positive improvements. We consider ourselves part of the communities in which we operate and we take great pride in being active participants.
PBS is a proud Gold-Certified business by the City of Portland’s Sustainability at Work program. Sustainability at Work organizations “walk the talk” of green business, from recycling and reducing energy to bike commuting and community giving. The program provides a portal for residents to connect with businesses making positive impacts on our economy, community, and environment.
Community Investments
The PBS Community Investment Initiative donates professional services and capabilities for non-profit causes in the neighborhoods in which we operate. As a core component of our Sustainability Action Plan, this initiative fosters the planning, design, or construction support process for projects that positively affect our communities. Projects are nominated by PBS staff and reviewed by our Sustainability Team for their long-term impacts, opportunities for engagement, positive social changes, and support by the local community.
Our mission is to use our professional services and resources to create new opportunities and address the challenges our communities face through pro bono work.
To date, PBS has donated tens-of-thousands of dollars in professional services to community projects under this program.
